The Religious Basis for Zionism
What support is there from scripture, that religious people can use to support the right of the Jewish people to self-determination in the land of Israel? We have to begin with several caveats:
1. COFIS is a secular organisation, with members, associates and supporters of many religions and of none. The legitimacy of Israel on secular legal grounds is beyond question and, as an organisation, we neither affirm nor deny any of the arguments from religion. We treat the beliefs of our Jewish, Christian and Muslim supporters with honesty, courtesy and respect.
2. There is no single approach to the issue of Zionism within any faith group, and religious people can have secular reasons for their political beliefs. These articles have been written with reference to what can be as accepted as sacred scripture within the mainstream of the respective faith groups.
3. Since the Jewish scriptures (the Torah; first five books of the Jewish and Christian Bibles) and the Tanakh (the 24 books of the Jewish Bible which become the 39 books of the Christian Old Testament) inspired both Christianity and Islam, we shall look at the beliefs of all three traditions.
